This exam is taken in a moderately complex care situation.
In this phase of the training course you are responsible for the entire care to the new mother prior
to, during and after giving birth. Take into account cultural differences and the specific customs
and practices in the family with a new baby. Care for the baby and provide support in breast-
feeding or bottle-feeding. In maternity care, collect information about the health situation of the
new mother and the baby. Report the information in the maternity file. Undertake action in the
case of peculiarities, such as consulting the midwife or a lactation expert. Provide the new mother
and her partner with information, advice and instruction concerning nourishment and care for the
baby.
If there are more children in the family, take care of them and involve them in their new brother or
sister. Identify possible problems in the physical, emotional and social areas in good time. Provide
suitable supervision and call in the network and/or other health care providers if required.
The birth of a baby is usually a happy occasion, and many people will want to congratulate the
family in the first few days. This means that, in the case of most new families, you are very
welcoming towards the people from the family’s network.
As a maternity assistant, you are also responsible for maintaining the spaces where the mother
and child remain. Proper hygiene prevents complications and infections.
In order to provide optimum care, you identify developments in the organisation and contribute to
quality measurement and policy within the institution.
